Happy Birthday, Jesse

    Happy Birthday, Jesse!

I've been saying he was 19 years old for the past few weeks, but in actual fact, today is his birthday.

He says he feels younger than he did last year.

A year ago, he was so ill. Looked like death warmed over. Had no energy, no stamina, couldn't stand for any length of time. Sleep was haphazard and all over the board.

This year is a much better picture. He has gone for a few walks. Gone for a couple of bike rides. Cut the grass with the lawn tractor. He's gone uptown with me three times in the past couple of weeks with no ill effects.

His colour is good, his eyes are clearer. His appetite is improving. And, he is actually (occasionally) sleeping at night. That has not happened in well over a year.

Usually he falls asleep just before dawn and sleeps till mid-day. Then he's up the rest of the day, and the next night, and maybe the next one, later falling asleep around dawn of THAT day. Occasionally he'll have a nap late afternoon till late evening -- guaranteeing that he'll be up overnight and probably the next one too.

But last night, he slept from 10:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.

    Makes a mother proud.

Tomorrow I will drive him uptown again and we'll pick up a few things for his birthday. We'll have a family get-together over dinner and for the evening. And maybe Jess will join us for the whole thing, rather than needing to go to bed partway through the proceedings.

Well, that might be asking TOO much. Whatever he does will be fine though, because ... it's his birthday!

Congratulations, Jesse Smith. May this year be a far better one than the last one was.
